RE: 2019 Novel Coronavirus (2019-nCoV) Communication

Due to recent events and news coverage, many may be wondering if their clean air systems will be effective against the COVID-19 virus.  The CDC, WHO, American Lung Association, EPA, American College of Allergists, and several other reputable organizations have concurred that indoor air quality is linked to over 60% of illnesses.  We here at Climatize Heating & Cooling have been advocates of indoor air quality control since we started our business.  For the past 10 years, we have had firsthand knowledge of just how much bacteria and other debris can accumulate in your air system.  We personally have clean air systems installed in our own homes and office. We understand and promote these benefits, believing that we have the most effective product in the industry.

There are 3 types of air contaminants.
  • Phase 1 – particulates such as: dust, pet dander, hair, smoke, etc
  • Phase 2 – biological such as: mold, bacteria, viruses, dust mite feces, etc
  • Phase 3- Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC): chemicals, pesticides, formaldehyde, etc
Depending on the price range and specific brand, filters may ignore up to 90% of particles. Phase 2 contaminants are treated with UVC.  We have the highest intensity UVC lamps on the residential market today at 180 microwatts at 1 meter away.

With the right intensity and contact time, our air cleaner (UVC) can kill these kinds of bacteria and microorganisms.  The amount of UVC intensity, measured in microwatts, necessary to kill viruses varies from strain to strain.

For example, here is the number of microwatts it would take to “kill” certain viruses:
Adeno Virus Type III – 3 ,000 - 4,500 microwatts
Bacteriophage – 6,600 microwatts
Influenza – 6,600 microwatts
Infectious Hepatitis – 8,000 microwatts

As you can see, some are easier to kill than others, but all are killed by UVC. What we do know is it takes a considerable amount of UVC dosage to kill germs and viruses. The principle of UVC kill and sterilization is related to intensity of the lamps used. The more powerful the lamp, the better the kill. Longer ducts with more opportunity for contact and dwell time create an environment for a better kill per pass. The slower the air is moving, the better the kill. So, we do have some variables here. Running your fan mode to ON with our clean air system is your best defense.
Our FM UVC and RM UVC models are designed to meet or exceed the design parameters set forth by Westinghouse and RTI labs. These labs tested and reported that you need a minimum of a 110-Microwatt lamp in an airflow, up to 2400 CFM, to get a 70 to 85% kill on most micro-organisms in a duct system. The Novel Coronavirus would fall into this category. Although a 100% kill rate will not be obtained per pass, deactivation of the virus through sterilization is probable on every pass. Either way, kill or sterilization, the net effect is the same. If we kill it, it can’t harm us. If we sterilize it, it becomes deactivated and rendered harmless as well since it can’t reproduce. The bottom line is that we have the highest microwatt intensity lamps on the residential market today at 180 microwatts @ one meter away.
Some of you already know the incredible benefits of our clean air systems, such as reduction in both allergy and respiratory issues. You can rest assured that you have the best indoor air quality products working for you 24/7.

We thank you for taking the time to read this letter and we hope that we have eased some of your concerns.  If you have any questions or are interested in our indoor air quality system for your office or home, feel free to call our office.  865-816-6477
